The Blackmore Vale, often referred to as “Thomas Hardy’s Vale,” is a picturesque area of farmland and gentle hills, perfect for walking and cycling. The River Stour winds through the region, offering scenic walking routes and opportunities to spot kingfishers, otters, and other wildlife.

The Cranborne Chase Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty extends into North Dorset, offering stunning landscapes, ancient woodlands, and rare wildlife. The area is home to deer, badgers, and a variety of bird species, making it a popular spot for nature enthusiasts. Fontmell Down and Melbury Beacon are great for wildflower meadows and panoramic views.

History & Heritage

North Dorset is steeped in history, with connections to Thomas Hardy, who set many of his novels in the area. Shaftesbury is one of the oldest towns in England, founded by King Alfred the Great in the 9th century. The town’s Gold Hill, a steep cobbled street, is one of the most iconic views in Dorset. Blandford Forum is known for its Georgian architecture, largely rebuilt after a devastating fire in the 18th century.

The region is also home to Hod Hill, an Iron Age hill fort, and Sturminster Newton Mill, a historic watermill on the River Stour. The Cranborne Chase area has a rich archaeological heritage, with ancient burial mounds, Roman roads, and medieval settlements. North Dorset’s history is deeply intertwined with its rural landscape, offering a fascinating glimpse into the past.
